After buying a GTV of another forum member earlier this year I thought I would start a thread for the work I've have/will be doing to it. Feedback comments and encourage welcomed, I'll need it......
I bought this GTV in April this year, I wasn’t looking to buy another GTV but saw this one being offered locally and decided to take a look. It’s a T reg (1999 registered - October 1998 manufacture date) 2.0 Lusso, Alfa Red with black leather interior. Things did not look good for the car, the paintwork was/is in a shocking state although bodywise it all looked original with no obvious damage apart from a few parking dinks here and there and a damaged number plate mount. The car apparently had a half finished rattle can paint job and the chap I purchased it off had removed some of the paint but it was still quite terrible state. Clearly the car hadn’t seen a lot of love for quite a few years.
After seeing the car I ummed and erred for a couple of weeks, my head was saying walk away, neigh run away....I looked at a couple of other cars but eventually bit the bullet, made an offer and a deal was reached to pickup the car on a Friday evening after work. It was Friday the 13th, possibly not a good day to buy a GTV of dubious condition. A one day policy was arranged for about £25 as the easiest method of getting it the short distance home and in the end the journey went ok and was uneventful.
The car came with two and a half months tax, which I took off and refunded, and a MOT which has now expired. The drive home felt like the car was very squishy compared to my previous GTvs so I expect all the bushes have seen better days, the engine seemed ok, slight variator noise on startup but nothing really horrible. Temperature gauge was all over the shop. Airbag light and ABS lights on although the ABS/handbrake light is very dim for some reason and I didn’t spot the ABS issue until after the deal was done because of this. The clutch was heavy and the release bearing noisy so a new clutch is on the cards. One tyre has bad side wall cracking so will need a replacement. No obvious service history, 86,000 miles on the clock and a few MOTs which backup the mileage.
Next part to follow.
