All that glitters is not gold .....
. Or am I being harsh? Well for a 13 yr GTV it was immaculate inside & out, interior was gorgeous - Luke, they'd sorted out the drivers side. No groans or knocks from suspension, Air Con worked, Air bag light sorted, looked like a new radiator..... BUT the clutch was totally knacked
. Foot down & it was slipping like a nutter plus very high bite point as well. Talk about disappointment. Darn it! He said it'd only done 2k town driving in the last 2 years by the OAP owner. Plus although there were no noises from suspension there was no evidence of new bushes / arms etc at all so I presume they're still the originals?? The dealer promised to include new clutch in price (AFG Kent / Giallo are Maserati specialists), but when I offered £5k cash & I'll risk the suspension he wouldn't budge an inch from £6k. So I walked away. Amazed, I reckon he would've paid about £2k max as trade-in for it so still good profit. I did get a free cuppa tea though ....
Also, the cambelt was changed last Sept by a local rural garage but the bill just said "cambelt replacement kit @ £148.00 + £500.00 labour = £648.00 total". My big worry is this non-Alfa specialist hadn't done the pulleys, ancillaries etc, but am I being a bit fussy???
Such a shame, it has been well looked after, well up to 2 yrs ago anyway which was the last service. Not to the degree like you enthusiasts like you guys here, but all services etc done by the book. He's convinced he'll sell it at £6k at that mileage esp with new clutch. My big worry is what else will start failing soon esp with the MOT advisories like rusting rear spring, inside front tyres wearing out etc. I am budgeting £1k a year for bits.
I'm still tempted so will call him at w'end. If it hasn't shifted he may well come tumbling down. Nice fella, use to run an Alfa dealer years ago, but he's standing his ground! However, getting a well-sorted GTV V6 at big miles but half the price is definitely appealing to me more now. But ooooh..... it did look stunning
