Home from work, had food and picked up a terminal clamp off my fantastic garage owning neighbour mate who had brought it home with him.
My other fantastic mate turned up and helped me mod my old VAG OBD cable using a bit of scrap wire and my old soldering iron.
Then up to the in-laws and after a bit of fiddling and forcing we got the old clamp off and then fitted the new one. Rescued the battery from where it had been on trickle charge for over 24hrs. Test fitted everything and the car unlocked and fired up first time.
We'd made pretty good progress tonight in a couple of hours and felt we were on a roll, so I got my notebook out and connected the modded OBD cable up, ready to run FIATCUSCAN and reset the airbag.....
Oh dear, how much fun to have our progress thwarted by a bleeding Windows driver problem - I hadn't tested the cable before leaving home as we were in a hurry, but no worries, I just jumped on the in-law's wifi from the comfort of my GTV driver's seat and download the correct driver. Or so I thought. Despite being convinced the driver was the correct one it would not have it, and me working in IT I wouldn't give up.
An hour or so later we gave up and checked the fluid levels - oil needs topping up, as does the power steering fluid slightly. My friend noticed a pipe that had been rubbing on the engine so we rerouted that. Once I've got it through an MOT I may even treat it to a service!
One thing that did worry us was a noise coming from the engine bay that we didn't notice on the test drive - I've made a very short video, maybe you'd be kind enough to have a listen and see if you can recognise what is causing it?

After getting home and doing a bit of research, it seems I was using the correct driver, but I needed to modify a couple of inf files to contain the details of my usb device and provide the link that lets it identify with the driver.
This damned car is getting under my skin already and taking over my life when I've got way too many important things I should be doing already!
