I'd try and sort out the problem with "its very rough when cold" first before you start paying out on replacement bearings etc.
Engines are usually over noisy if they are running rough, it cold be there is a fault on one cylinder not firing properly?
I've never yet heard of small ends failing (not to say they can't!).
To check 'Bid ends' you need to drive fairly slowly, in a gear too high for the engine speed such that your engine is labouring. There will be a deep knocking noise from bottom of the engine if the 'big end' shells are worn.
