Crazed Fuel gauge intermittent problem

My fuel gauge is behaving strangely and to better understand the situation I hope to get some answers from the AO community. I have this problem since I bought the car.

What happens when you turn the ignition key in your GTV?
-Besides the control lights (red and amber, placed in the rev counter/speedo) going on and off for test purposes
-Besides the water temp gauge flashing it's red lamp

What happens in the fuel gauge?

Mine does not auto-test the amber fuel-reserve light, and does not indicate the amount of fuel in the tank. It looks completely off, not powered.

BUT, after few miles, it wakes up, sometimes: it shows full tank until the indicator slowly goes down to show the real amount of petrol. Most of the times it does not work at all.

Can you please complete this procedure in your car and tell me what happens?
1)sit in your GTV
2)light the dashboard with the ignition key (not needed to start the engine)
3)check if the fuel gauge flashes the reserve light for testing it and if the fuel indicator steps up directly to show how much fuel you got

Thanks, I would appreciate your answer to understand how it should behave. Note that once it starts working it stays alive until I park the car for few hours, which should exclude a dodgy contact.
