If you know approximately how much fuel you have in the tank, you can do a rudimetary test from the instrument end.
The method differs depending on whether you have a phase 1 or 2/3.
For p1, remove the MAIN instruments and find the pink wire on connector A ( should be the white one ) pin 7
Connect a multimeter to the car body and to the pink wire.
You should get a reading tallying with this :
Full : 0R to 6R
3/4 : 59R to 69R
1/2 : 116R to 126R
1/4 : 186R to 201R
Start of reserve : 262R
Empty : 295R to 315R
For a phase 2 or 3, remove the auxiliary instrument pack connector and test across pins 2 and 3 ( Pink and Black-Purple ).
As to removing the top of the tank, I don't know but TotallyAlfa do a tool to remove the fuel pump on TSs. I don't know if that applies to GTV/Spiders.
