Knocking noise from the rear end

Hey, me again!

Just picked up my p plate gtv on friday and i knew there were a couple of features with it but happy to accept that and sort them out as i like to get to know my cars. I seem to have a knocking noise from the back end so started having a poke around. Need to get it up the the air to check everything properly but that will have to wait till the bank holiday. One thing i did notice is that the exhaust back box sits VERY close to one of the rear mounts and if you rock it slightly it can tap against it so im wondering if that may be my issue as the knocking only happens over bumps etc. Should the back box be that close or is something not sitting correctly?

Will try and get a picture if needed to show what i mean.

Cheers
Marc

Hi Sparky have you inspected the spring pan and dog leg bushes on the rear suspension as this is most likely to cause the knocking you describe regarding the rear. It could be the exhaust though although that is less of a knock more of a rattle. The exhaust has a crease where it goes over the rear subframe and it does sit very close, also check the heat shield under the very last box at the back as this is known to work loose.

if you can make the back box hit something by waggling it around.. it sure will when you a driving.. wedge a bit of leather in there and go for a drive.. old glove or something..

Most common back end knocks can be..

Exhaust
Any of the suspension bushes
Upper wishbone ball joints
ARB droplinks
ARB bushes
Shock absorbers..

If it is that.. it it straightforward to sort it.. if you can't do it yourself any exhaust place will be ok.. exhaust pipe hanging can be a bit of a black art..

Cheers, will probably be easier for me to take it to an exhaust place as cant imagine its that easy to do it right using axle stands etc, plus i can have a good look under the car while its up on the ramp

Loving this forum already!

all of my exhaust rubbers and locating hooks are in good order but i still had to wedge a tiny bit of wood in between exhaust and subframe as i had a knock too

I tried to fix my exhaust bumping noise (it's a badly done custom job) by tightening down the rubber bush onto one of the metal bracket...

Now it squeeks loudly!!

Guess those things hang loosely for a good reason then... back to the drawing board.
