So, I've had my black GTV around 2 weeks. It is a phase 2 (1999) and has had plenty of money thrown at it over the years. So far, so good (ok the accelerator cable snapped after just 6 days but that's one of those things)
Anyway, with it's 17in Teledials and being black, she scrubs up well and gets plenty of nice comments. Except one. Some guy I know has done abit of a hatchet job on her and got me all paranoid now..
She had an engine rebuild around 2,000 miles ago. The crank was reground and rebuilt with oversize bearings, the belts changed etc and all the fluid levels checked. To me, she drives great with no knocking noises so it hasn't really worried me.
Now this guy, not really a friend, more an acquaintance, is very clued up in regards to cars and asked to have a look around the car as he used to own a GTV years ago apparently. His verdict; the clutch may be on it's way out, the radiator only has one fan (should be two?) and wants replacing and the rear silencer and back-box are shot.
He reckons it's not worth the money I paid - it cost me a grand. M.O.T 'till next Jan and taxed. I thought that was reasonable??
The clutch was quite stiff and squeaky when I got the car so when the accelerator cable went, I got them to grease the plates. No more squeak, not as stiff. This guy however assured me that the crank being rebuilt will result in a new clutch being needed. Any ideas??
The radiator does only have one fan. I'm not sure if this is a big deal? The engine temp is pretty constant around 90 after it's warmed up and I've heard the fan kick in if I've been stood still for a while. I've yet to see the temp gage go over 100.
As for the exhaust - yep I'll give him that. The chrome tailpipe was hanging on by a thread and the silencer did look a little worse for wear. I took her to a local exhaust specialist who do bespoke stuff and he advised me to whip off the shot silencer completely, run a pipe through to the back-box and replace the knackered pipe. Job done, pretty cheap and she does sound a lot better to boot.
All this has got me paranoid now - I know GTV's are high maintenance at times and money has to be thrown at them now and then. It's more to do with him knowing his cars and me not being very clued up - every bloody noise has me referring to these fine pages, and tbh I'm confusing myself with all i'm reading lol.
Has anyone else been in this position or are you all mechanically minded? Surely I can't be the only idiot here?
