Airbox wanted/needed/question

I had the stupid idea of replacing the air filter on my v6 gtv phase 2. The bolts on the maf to box had rusted, the support bracke bolts were impossible to get at (thaks to the maf being in the way). Eventually I managed to get it off with a bit of damage and some frankly amazing arm arm to reach under the front bumper for a ratchet with 12 extensions on and the other arm to undo the rust bolt at the top....I hate working on alfas!

The damage is, completely rusted maf clamps, rusted bolts, snapped captive bolt, rusted main clamp, 1 broken bolt hole (the one with rubber grommets) and the plastic cracked around several bolt holes.

What do you guys reccomend I do? I've looked at CDA boxes but they are pretty expensive and insurance people may not be too happy (classic car insurance have pics of my engine bay). People seem to discourage pipercross cone filters therefore I am inclined to go OEM. Trouble is that I have not seen the filter housing on sale anywhere....will a 2L twinny one be made to fit? If so...anyone have one to spare?

Anyone had any luck with CDA boxes...any pics of them fitted to a v6 24v?

Spider TS

Seems to be a common problem. I had exactly the same experience as you and managed to get a reconditioned box from a specialised breaker, who is also a forum member. Drop him an email to see if he can help you out:

Otherwise, instead of a CDA box have a look at the picture that is halfway through this post from P3rLuS. Cost seems reasonable.

My Spider is a 2 litre TS but this is what I had to do....

I had the same problem when changing my air filter, one of the three bolts securing the lid snapped, I bought a complete air box from an Alfa breaker, I managed to remove the lid with snapping any of the bolts! I decided to buy some 10mil stainless steel bolts 25 mm's long to replace the badly corroded steel bolts with the brass inserts (which were corroded solid). All I had to do was carefully drill out the holes in the lid to 10mil so the bolts would go through....
Now I know changing the air filter in future will be a doddle...…

I fitted a BMC CDA 3 years ago - excellent product and my car hasnt been through a MAF since. Every other performance filter I am aware of has a reputation for killing MAFs. Like you say, the original box is an utter nmare to get off, the bolts always rust and the box breaks. I used a technique of praying, screaming, and violence.

The CDA kit is not easy though - you need to move one of the rubber pipes to the top with new clips - so the CDA box is hanging down where the old box was. Remove the big old metal bracket completely. I never figured how to attach to the bottom funnel though - the CDA was just hanging down unattached at the bottom - avoid puddles! I then took it to Peak Alfa who have done a few of these - they silconed it to the the bottom funnel thing I think.

A guy on here really helped with fitting the CDA; here is the thread:

It makes a lovely sound in tandem with the Alfaholics exhaust and apparently gives more pwer.
