I've had a quick look at the ABS idea. Electrically, it may be feasible. Early P2 cars ( pre Sept 2000 ) seem to use the same wheel sensors and the ABS ECUs are wired identically with 2 exceptions :
Phase 2 Pin 12 is not connected to the diagnostics connector. This is probably of little consequence as pin 11 is all that's necessary.
Phase 2 pin 22 is connected to the speedo ( which is what you'd want ).
So, if the connectors are the same, you may only need to add a wire to ABS ECU pin 22 and connect it to your speedo and it's all good. Maybe. It does need more investigation in respect of functionality and connector compatibility. Also finding the terminal type for the connector may be an issue ( carefully remove wire and terminal from a car being scrapped? ).
The other issue is getting the speedo correct for the ABS signal which I believe is a different pulse rate to the phase 1. Changing the instrument pack may be the most difficult thing ( different warning lights etc ).
