Spider hood 5th arc doesn't rise after unlocking - why?
Car is a '98 phase-1 Twinspark Spider.
Handbrake on - unlatch front catches - operate roof switch. Locking motors both run to unlock 5th arc (back part of roof) which rises slightly.
Then - nothing - hydraulic pump doesn't start/5th arc doesn't rise - UNLESS I lift the 5th arc very slightly - then the hydraulics start and take over. Hood cover opens fine, etc.
I read the fault codes and had a fault for 5th arc locked switch. I tested both locked and resting switches - all fine - so I swapped both locking motor/switch units with the ones on my other Spider. No difference to either car (handy to have a spare, though).
Next I tried adjusting the pins to clamp more, and again to clamp less. No difference.
Sometimes the 5th arc will rise anyway without being touched, but it always needs that touch the first time.
Another unrelated question - when the roof first starts to fold back on itself (from the front edge), it folds back with an almighty jerk. This applies to both my Spiders. Once again a light touch upwards is enough to make the folding happen smoothly. Thinking the hinge might be going 'over-centre', I tried adjusting the hinge stop pins. No difference.
One day I hope to sell this car - don't want to explain all this touching for the next owner.
So if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Perhaps the hydraulic ram has a position switch on it?
