Well since getting the car, except for the little niggles and my breaking the rear plastic screen I now have a massive problem / bill to face...
It's been with an Alfa Specialist in a small town called Somma Lombardo near to where I work and from what I understand there are three leaks of oil going on... The main one described as 'una situazione molto grave' is between the engine and gearbox and is coming from the very back of the engine. They've said it will take a lot of labour to get to it, taking off the gearbox and a shed load of other parts first.
Secondly there are two leaks in the 'distribuzione' so the timing belt components etc... There's also a lot of salt under the car at present from the drive to here from the UK and they want to clear a lot of that up aswell.
So with a pretty much refreshed engine including all belts, tensioners, idlers, filters, plugs, oil, a new clutch (kinda while you're there given the 'box would be off), a scrubbed and protected subframe and a gearbox oil change the total they're saying is 2595 euros
No clue as to what to do. It needs doing and soon but I can get an engine in the UK from someone reputable (Autolusso for example) for about £400 of EBay... I know that doesn't sort the corrosion issue etc but it just seems an awful lot. Perhaps it's just the labour rate, but these guys come highly recommended and have around 20 Alfas in their yard with 50s spiders, a Montreal, old school GTVs, S1-S4 spiders and a couple of 916s...
