Electric Hood Fault
Hello, I just found this place yesterday and this is my first post so here goes.
I've had my Spider for 4 years now, 1999 2.0 TS Lusso, complete with frayed bits on the hood where the window corner rubs etc etc.
It had 4k on it when I got it and has 33k now. Imported from Germany, came over with a guy working for NATO.
Have no complaints whatsoever even given a few faults but the faults are racking up and I think it's about time I tried to fix them.
I only have a GTV handbook so first thing is I have no detail of the hood operation at all and wouldn't you know the hood has stopped working completely.
My local Alfa dealership is useless (did I bother to say that??). Every time I go in some angry customer is shouting at them, then I get my go.
Anyway since I've had it the electric hood operation has been temperamental. Sometimes it worked perfectly, other times it would go down ok but when it was going up it would stop just as the rear windshield was finally being lowered and the little red light would come on. Then I'd get out of the car trying to hide my embarassment and wrestle with it manually until it locked down. It never quite went up as well when you did it manually as when it worked properly. Always seemed to have a little too much tension left in it.
So this intermittent failure continued and just got worse. Soon it wouldn't even bother trying. I'd press the button to drop the hood and it would just flash away at me and do nothing. Now if I start the process manually it lets me try and continue automatically but the hydraulic unit just winds away and the hood just moves in slow motion never really getting anywhere. The little red light is pretty much permanenetly blinking as soon as you press it.
Leads me to think things like either the hydraulic pump is spinning but not pumping, a valve is stuck, there is an airlock in the system or something else expensive. I've poked and prodded everything about for ever and nothing seems to help. There is no way I'm taking it to the dealer as they will probably tell me it needs a new hood. I can't stand not being able to fix things myself and being charged crazy amounts for simple jobs so are there any hood experts out there at all???
Can these systems be bled or is that not something they need?
What hydraulic fluid do they take?
My cover catch release motor also seized so the rear cover wouldn't open but I fixed that by freeing up the central pivot behind the rear parcel shelf and it sprang back to life again. I guess they stick every now and then.
This is really winding me up now as I seem to have a Spider shaped GTV because of this dumb problem.
As luck would have it I also have a huge gash in the rear windshield, dealer quote of Ģ300 for a new bit (+vat presumably). Anyone know of any cheaper alternatives?
Thanks very much for any information that might help me sort this finally! Cheers.
