Hello and help please
I am a victim to my impulses and especially towards Italian cars. I had a lovely Fiat Coupe 20VT for a number of years and also a 166 3.0 V6 at the same time. For some stupid reason I sold them both and bought a Mazda RX8. That did absolutely nothing for me - no noise, too refined and lacked the fear factor of an Italian (the fear that you might not make it home)
I sold the RX8 last week and went to see a Cup. You guessed it - I fell for her. I had the blinkers on and obviously was ignorant of all the potential issues with this particular car. On paper it sounded good - 2002, 1 owner, decent service history, new cambelt, clutch etc. On the test drive it was obvious that the rear bushes were shot - squeaking and creaking etc.
Having parted with the cash I drove home with a smile on my ugly mug. Really enjoying the ride until I stopped and when idling the engine light started flashing. Went out quickly though so I thought I would monitor the situation. Got home Ok.
Started her up next morning and she started first turn - happy days I thought. Got 100 yards down the road and the car felt like it hit a barrier and the engine light flashed and she stalled. Started ok again and when warmed up it wasnt too bad although it does seem to misfire sometimes.
Took her to local garage for a once over today and asked them to plug her in. The readings came up as random misfires on cylinders 1,2&3. Lambdas tested and all seemed to behave normally. I have a set of plugs to fit so will try that - I know that this job is a bugger as I did it on my 166 V6. Can you shed some light on potential issues that could have this effect on the car?
Along with that the garage also advised me of some other issues to sort out -
1) rear bushes shot (I knew this and have sourced rear polybush set and powdercoated lower arms from fleabay)
2) Rear bumpstops broken off and loose in the springs.
3) the rear springs appear too low and worn.
4) oil cooler has slight leak and oil pipes quite rusty.
5) Handbrake cables have seen better days.
Now here is where you come in please -
Any ideas on misfires? dodgy coil pack(s)? MAF?
What springs shall I get - not fussed about lowering etc.
Any idea where I can get bump stops?
Is it worth sourcing used oil cooler etc or is that false economy?
Can you get braided oil pipes for the V6 GTV as they may be easier to fit?
Is it worth cleaning throttle body etc?
Sorry to waffle on but I think I am going to love this car and want her to be right.
PS I also have obtained thermostat and coolant temp sensor to fit as well.
