Following on from my other thread in regards to my clutch\ gearbox issue I have got full feedback from my mechanic today about my recently purchased GTV (6 weeks ago). She is a lovely if not exceptional condition for a 13 year old car and hasnt lost any of its shine and sparkle. The interior is mint and has been well cared for and the engine bay is shockingly clean again for the year so why has she broken my heart. This is why...
Had a problem where I cant find any gears which appears once a week for the past 5 weeks when yesterday the fault appeared like 10+ times on one drive (20 minutes) and when it happens its quite dangerous. Well it was time to stick it in the mechanic shop to find out the full in and outs of it all and people it aint good.
Basically the release bearings have shattered in the gearbox so its a bit of a mess, cost of repair £600. The mechanics are sure that this is the cause of the problems, they arent new to the odd Alfa coming in but you might be right it may also be a failure in the gearbox as well but unlikely as with the engine off the gearbox feels fine and entry to all gears is fine without any problems at all. I just cant pay money on fixing this problem without doing the cambelt. The cambelt maybe be fine who knows and my variator does sound like a diesal for the first 10 seconds - 1 minute but it does shut up and all the power is still in the engine, it has only done 90,000 on a S plate.
So this is it, after a long chat with the wife, we cant go through with the repair as we just dont have the money this side of Christmas and it was only a short term bit of fun buy anyway to get me out of a fix as beloved MG HG failed on me along with my wifes TF's HG 4 days later so one of the MG's just had to go, sadly it was my ZS
. Also with a TF in the family as well as the GTV where would we ever put the push chair when we have kids next year
So sadly due to not having the skills to do this myself I have no choice but to offer my car now, obviously to this forum first
. It is a shame as if I could just do the clutch for the price of it I wouldnt bother with the belts and it becomes finacially viable again but sadly I dont
. I know there is a fantastic car in there and to someone with the skill set to repair its a great bargain so if anyone is interest in my Phase 1 GTV S 90,000, totally standard apart from a sports exhaust backbox then please PM me. If I dont get any response in the next 5 days then I will sadly have to put this lovely GTV on flea bay and break my heart doing it
Can I point out that this would also make a superb donner car as I believe phase 1 parts are now unavailable and the engine appears to be me great condition with quite a few new parts fitted by the previous owner. Things like the MAF look new. I believe the previous owner may have been chasing the classic split in the throttle pipe and changed the expense MAF first
1998 Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0TS phase 1 Lusso Edition.
90,000 miles (just turned 90,000 will get correct figure if required but literally just turned)
Standard alloy wheels
Rosso Red? (the darker red)
Lusso black leather interior with the stitched in Alfa Romeo badge (good condition with only minor wear on the bolster of the drivers seat)
Just changed front door speakers.
New middle(rear) exhaust pipe (fitted in my ownership)
New master slave cylinder (fitted in my ownership)
Carpets are in superb condition along with the dash (nothing broken or ripped)
Everything fully works apart from the rear screen demister. So the windows all work like they should, she locks like she should, all the lights work like they should, oh and the screen washer works now thanks to a full flush at the weekend.
No knocking from the rear
and no engine warning lights at all
Starts first time without missing a beat everytime.
She hasnt even got any door dents from parking which is just outstanding for 13 years old. I 'm not saying she hasnt got the odd little mark but nothing like you would expect on a car of this age, it really is nice to see that not all cars get parking dents
Now for the known bad points:
Release bearing collapsed in gearbox causing the lose of gear changing periodically. (the main fault) also reverse can be hard at times but I have found that if you select first then reverse it goes in first time, everytime.
rear demister doesnt work
minor rocker cover leak (my next intended fix, simples)
I want £400 no offers. It could make a nice return in the right hands or a cracking donner car for someone with room and know how at the end of the day it is only believed to be a trashed clutch and I did pay £1000 happily for this car 6 weeks ago and I didnt buy a dog (well a part from the clutch bearings
) and I think we all knoiw what the scrap value is on a GTV in the right hands and to me being a phase 1 its more wantable for parts.
Off course if anyone of you kind people have pitty on me and want to save a GTV from sadly going into car heaven and help a man in need and have the skills to do a clutch repair for me then please feel free to make my day but I am prepared for the worst. Please dont give me a hard time as I dont want to do this and scrap another GTV as in my 6 weeks of ownership I did find true happiness away from MG which is something I believed I would never find and I have found and joined one of the friendly and best forums I have ever belonged to and I really mean that.
