So, the latest is that we still have not discovered what the problem is.
The saintly 00AlfaAndy came over and we started taking bits off the car with a view to getting the head off.
The battery has been disconnected.
The Air filter, Maf, associated pipes and throttle body are now in the boot.
The coil pack cover and cam cover have been removed, the coil packs are out of the way - no obvious signs of anything broken yet.
The cambelt cover is off and the auxillary belt, balance shaft belt and cam belt are no longer on the engine.
The air conditioning unit is tied up out of the way and we removed the mount it sits on so that we could get the exhaust manifold off. That has been taken off and the downpipes and cat(alytic converter) are sitting in bin bags in my front room.
One of the first things that was done was to take off the top and bottom hoses, as well as the ones attached to the thermostat. If I was to do this again, I'd do it as late as possible, so that the antifreeze wouldn't go up my nose whilst I was simultaneously lying in a puddle of it...
So, while we were close to getting the head off (we were beaten by the light and my patience - the swear jar looks healthy again), at least one job remains and that is to undo the two nuts underneath the intake chamber (I think that's what it is) to the rear of the engine. They are an absolute female dog to remove. It looks as though they could possibly be accessed from underneath the car with a two foot (!) extension bar but does anyone have any tips on how to get these loose?
