OK, I've just realised that we're talking about different things and I have probably confused the issue.
The black can on the back of the V6 engine is, indeed, the crankcase breather - and it should be cleaned out.
I was thinking we were taking about a plastic box shaped like a rectangular paint tin, on the RH side of the engine bay, mounted fairly low down, several blue plastic hoses. That's the charcoal canister. The device in the boot is a vapour/liquid separator that's part of the same system. This applies to the TS at least, maybe with the V6 it is in the front RH wheelarch (the usual place on other models).
