Out of curiosity (I know nothing about pistons etc) Why could you not just get the pistons out of another 3.5 V6 car? There are plenty of them out there......
The heads are going off to be skimmed, ported and gasflowed. They will alo be checked out and pressure tested. I'm not going to the expense of cutting vave seats but may have new valve guides and springs.
Exhaust headers will be sent off to be ported (1.2mm all round) and ceramaic coated inside and out. (mine are phase 1 without the cat).
New SS equal length down pipes (may be ceramic coated) 3" to centre SS staight through then out to twin 2" tails with quad tailpipes.
Yes obligatory Q2 diff will be fitted.
I already have C&B cams, BMC, Autodelta flywheel and clutch, SS exhaust and remap on rolling road with unichip piggy back prodicing over 240bhp at 6k so if I can achieve a cost effective 0.5L (17%ish) with increased compression (say 11:1 or even 11.5:1) using only 98 - 100 ron, or super unleadead to avoid detonation.
I am not a fan of increasing rev range to much but say 6.5k/7k. I would hope for 280 - 300bhp. If I fit TB's at a later date I would then hope for guaranteed 300bhp.
Westwood do 100mm liners for the V6 at £650 inc VAT. There are a number of pistons out there that will fit 100mm bores and I am taking advice at present but prices suggest circa £700 inc vat.
The head gasket is a another area of weakness and I hear AHM's gasket set is bombproof so will consider this. Again not sure if the welding suggsted for the larger 3.7 and 3.8 needs doing and taking advice from AHM.
I understand the conrods are strong enough for 500bhp so consodering just having them balanced and shot-peened, again at reasonable cost.
Finally I hear heat treating the block will add rigidity and depending on cost will be an option.
Obviously a full rebuild including new bearing and re-ground crank unless I can pick up a 3.2 crank for decent money.
Reliability is KEY and I wnat to be able to run this rebuilt as hard as I wish without fear of component failure. So after the rebuild should be good for 100k + miles.
