MAF change......

I have had my GTV (JTS54) reg for over a month and am very happy with it but it seems to need a lot of revs when starting from cold, i live on a hill that i reverse up and i have to keep dipping the clutch to help it on its way up and then driving up the road i have to rev it in 1st and 2nd a good bit before changing up.(my ford KA was happy to change up after this short road section) After is had 10 mins drive or so it seems fine though.

I am considering having the MAF changed as i have done a bit of reading here and a few people have has this and been advised to change this.

I have found them quite reasonable here Fiat Parts, Fiat Spares, Alfa Parts and Alfa Romeo Spares Alfa Romeo GTV Air Flow Meter.....are these a good supplier???

If i decide to do this myself is there anything i should do or just unclip the pipe section and fit the new section. I have read someone saying to disconnect the battery first then fit the section then reconnect the battery and then start the car and leave it to idle for 10 mins. Is this correct?

I think there might be a reason the one your looking at is 36, and the proper BOSCH one is 112.

Reading peoples experiences on here. The cheapies tend not to work, and you end up buying a BOSCH anyway.

The symptoms that you describe don't sound like a MAF issue, take the car to an alfa independenmt specialist and get it checked out for fault codes,it should only cost 30 tops, sounds more like a temp sensor, ie the car doesn't know it's cold and consequently the ecu isn't demanding enough fuel.

Defo worth getting codes ( if any read ) however you could try disconnecting the MAF and taking it for a drive - it probably wont idle properly but if the MAF is faulty it should allow your car to rev cleanly.

A failing MAF wont necessarily show a fault code in any event

The parts place i listed says it is all real bosch parts(same as the Alfa eper code too) and the maf for my Boyfriend Fiat 20v turbo is 500 odd there. I understood the maf for the jts was a common one used on a few other cars?????

The car revs freely but seems like seems to cut a bit although never stalls reversing up the hill from cold(it is a steep hill), once underway its fine as long as you dont change up too low revs(as i said my KA and boy friends 20vt are fine almost straight away, the 20vt you can change into 3rd at 30 and it wont cut out even from cold cruising along at 1000rpm, the Alfa needs a few mins)

If i test the MAF by unplugging it from cold will the car be ok and what will it run like, if it is the MAF causing the slight hesitancy from cold will this be gone when the MAF is removed??? i read a post by Ian someone on the forums that this test was unconclusive to his maf problem...

As msgtv and 147Dav are suggesting, it doesn't sound like a MAF issue. It's easy to see if the MAF is your culprit and you do this simply by unplugging it.

You don't need to remove the MAF tubing, just pull out the sensor plug on the side.
Simply unclip it and then start the car. If MAF is the problem, you should notice an improvement with it unplugged.

When my MAF failed the symptoms began with hesitancy around 4.5k (like i was hitting the rev limiter while accelerating), followed a while later by a loss of all power while accelerating, and a failure to start. It would fire, but immediately die. I also had the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) illuminated on the dash - looks like an injector

The symptoms you describe don't shout MAF problem, but it's a five minute job to rule it out

Thanks i will try and unplug the maf and see what i think before i buy anything or book it in. I am down in Cornwall and real Alfa specialist are hard to come by so i try to do my homework as best as possible.

Is this the temperature sensor(cold start) mentioned in one of the above posts? Does the JTS have a 3 pin or 4 pin and is it an easy job? I am happy to change a few bits and bobs as the car is 7-8 years old now and prevention is the best cure i think.
