Droning noise... yes really!
I've noticed a droning noise appear over the last few days when driving my Spider, don't think it was there when I bought it a couple of weeks back, but maybe it was...
It sounds like it's coming from the rear left corner and it seems to vary a little with cornering (i.e. gets less on left-hand bends) so I'm picking it's a wheel bearing. But could be a tyre. I will swap the tyres around first.
Thing is I noticed the brake disc is quite grooved on that wheel - coincidence? I mean the sort of deep, rounded grooves that you get with old discs. I'm wondering if this can cause a noise when cruising because I recently had a 166 which had grooving on the right front disc and - you guessed it - there seemed to be a droning noise coming from that too.
So what I will probably do is to splash out on new discs all round (and file/sand the pads flat to re-use them if they're less than half worn!) and if that makes no difference, then I suppose I'd better replace the wheel bearing. Are wheel bearings a common failure on GTVs/Spiders?
But I just wondered if someone else had a similar experience with grooved discs. On my other cars the discs are all new or nearly new and no noise so I wonder if the droning is a symptom.
