RAC will pick you up and tow you to a tyre shop...

That is what I am relying on if my tyre explodes itself

I also have a spare wheel if any one is interested.

As for securing it you can use elastic grab hooks and surround the tyre and use the various body work holes to hold it tight

I think my cover would have done the same, but as I was over 100 miles away and it was a Sunday evening home was the only option available.

All the cars I've been in with run-flats (BMWs) have had a weird crashy ride, not what I'd call normal. I've been in a similar spec car without run-flats and it didn't have the same issues.

They are roughly 10% more expensive than the equivalent normal tyre. Not what I'd call hideous.
I was under the impression (never bought them myself) that they were a lot more expensive?
Just run a search for 225/40/18 (BMW 130i - the size used in the car I've been in with runflats) and it comes out at 142.61 for normal tyres and 202.88 for the exact same tyre (Pirelli PZero 225/40 R18 Y) in run flat version. That's over 40% more expensive for a run-flat tyre.
