Going to attempt a full refresh, wishbones, struts, springs, droplinks, top mounts over xmas.
How tight are the balljoints on the wishbones, will I need a fork splitter, or will just whacking it with a hammer do?
Also which order to replace things in? Bearing in mind the comments above I`m thinking:
Slacken all nuts+bolts
remove old wishbone + droplink
bolt new wishbone to subframe
loosly fit droplink
remove bottom bolts from strut
align hub onto balljoint and drop link onto arb
fit new strut
beer and mince pies all round
It sounds like you might be removing more items than we did, so that should give you more room for manouvre when it comes to reassembling it. To be honest, although I wrote the original post, I can't remember much about the job but pay attention to the paragraphs after I wrote "so for the sake of your sanity / bodyparts, I’ll describe what we would do if we were to do this again...."
Hopefully this and the remainder of the advice on here will help you.
To answer your other question, as the hub sits heavily on the balljoint, it's unlikely that it the hub and wishbone will just come apart in your hands (unless it is particularly knackered, or you have the strength of a gorilla...), therefore I would advise that you get a winding balljoint splitter (I just checked the Halfords site and they do one of these for £12), or the fork type (hammer also required), which is what I think I might have used.
I just hit it.
It's satisfying when it comes apart.
Good luck and let us know how you get on, especially if you have some experience that you can share.
