GTV gearbox problem?

Hi all,

I brought a GTV ts at the weekend I know it was making fairly quiet whining noise from the gearbox area, the seller said it was the gearbox, I feel like it's got much worse and I am planning on changing the gearbox but want to check that it's not something else first.

It makes a bit of a ratting noise when in neutral until the clutch pressed when that noise stops. The whining noise happens in every gear and is at it's worst the more you accelerate e.g lower gears.

I have tried searching for treads with the same description to the problems with my GTV, but no luck yet. I would appreciate any advice or if anyone could direct me to some similar treads that might help.

Cheers,
Josh

Check the oil level in the gearbox.. also a lot of these cars have never had a gearbox oil change as there is a myth that gear oil never needs to be changed.. I bought mine at 80,000.. gearbox whining and a gearchange like a bulldozer.. one oil change later and it was transformed.. there was so much metal floating around in the old oil that it looked like black metallic paint.. I used castrol fully synthetic 75 90

GTV gearbox problem

Hi Joshh

I had the exact same problem, a rattle at idle and at exactly 2500 rpm whatever gear I was in and whatever speed. Deducing that if gear and speed were irrelevant i decided it had to be at the fly wheel end or the clutch.

On starting investigations and after a bit of time, I got the 'groan' of a clutch bearing going and selecting or deselecting 4th gear became harder.

As suggested below, heat up the gearbox oil, and drain it. You will get a load of swarf come out. If you find there is 'movement' between the cogs then if take the end of the gearbox off you can tighten the whole mechanism. But take care not to ovr tighten.

I did this and the rattle went immediately, but I still had the groan. This is a new clutch unfortunatley.

If selection is a problem and a new clutch is too expensive right now, someone said to poor talcom powder in the bell housing through the hole at the top of the box covered with a rubber plug. I did this and the groan disappeared but replaced clutch after three months.

If it wasnt for the fact that we love these cars so much we probably wouldnt bother!!!

I have the same problem, (GTV 2.0 TS) 210000 km and just had a full service but they neglected the gearbox.... When idle a sort of jet engine sound comes of the engine. While driving a constant heavy noise is there no matter what gear. I tried to test rolling in neutral with 100km/h the noise gets much less however it's there. I think i should follow the advise given here at the forum and change the gearbox oil.
