A lucky escape re cam belt.
I'm posting this just to reinforce and confirm several things we are all aware of and just how careful you have to be.
I bought my V6 GTV around a month ago, the service record had a fishy look about it that made me distrust the last service and one 7000 miles but 4 years ago that stated that the cam belt had been done. I just didn't feel happy using the car so this week I had the belts, tensioners and water pump done at a local garage I used to use for work I couldn't fit in myself.
When I picked up the car tonight he showed me the parts. The belt was starting to fray at the edges, the tensioner was stiff and one of the pulleys had a very notchy bearing. The garage owner (he does the Alfas himself) said he thought that the engine had never been touched before in its 73000 miles. So, I'm £600 lighter but now have an engine I can trust after a very lucky escape. Had I trusted the service history for a little longer the thing would have let go for sure. I don't see it as money spent though, just invested into the value of the car.
Also on the plus side, he taunted his M3 owning mechanic by telling him the V6 was faster than his BMW then not letting him drive it.
