Battery - which one?

OK, so today I got nosey in the battery compartment of the spider and what do you know, the tray is almost double the size of the battery in there!

So what battery should be fitted? And if I fitted the much larger battery from my Golf TDI that I only recently bought and so am not keen to sell with the car, would it fry the Spider with too much juice? Would the bigger battery be a drain on the alternator?

It gets confusing because the repair manual describes a 70 ah battery, Eurocarparts recommends a 56 ah battery, there is a 55 ah battery fitted and the big diesel battery is 77 ah. Anyone got any suggestions?

If it helps, there is evidence that a previous owner fitted a bonkers subwoofer and so may have needed to make space by reducing the battery size.

I have just replaced the battery on mine, it is smaller in size than the original Alfa battery which is 70ah & filled the tray, not sure what the new one is but it is the one listed for my car.

Mine is a Bosch S3, 56 ah. It must be smaller than the original as there is still plenty of tray left.

A larger battery will not fry your Spider it is still 12 volts nominally. If discharged it will take longer, at the same charging current, to charge than a smaller battery, just like it takes a longer time to fill a larger bucket. I fitted a 90Ah battery that fills the space and that's because my GTV isn't used every day and this prevents the battery going too flat; the only problem is lifting it into place! (Or removing it).

From worldwide Bosch application brochure their recommendations for the 916 Spider models

1.8 TS 16V [916] 1998-2000

63Ah 610CCA Bosch S5005 or 60Ah 540CCA Bosch S4005

2.0 JTS [916] 2003-2006
2.0 TS 16V [916] 1995-2000
2.0 TS 16V [916] 2000-2006
2.0/3.0 V6, V6 Turbo [916] 1995-2000
3.0/3.2 V6 24V [916] 2000-2006

70Ah 760CCA Bosch S6001, 77Ah 780CCA Bosch S5008 or 60Ah 540CCA Bosch S4005

Bosch also show the 56Ah 480CCA Bosch S3005 as used on the 1.8/2.0 TS and some V6 applications or markets but its best to go with the larger batteries.

if the 77ah from your Golf fits, & the terminals are correct, install that & stop worrying.

Cheers Clive and everyone, very helpful, time to get rid of that iddy biddy battery and put the monster in there! Hmmm, wonder if the titchy thing will run the golf long enough for the buyer to get home?!
