Well i know from the history its has water pump, cambelt, radiator, auxillary belt, variator and thermostat(just verified) all within last 12-18 months the coolant doesnt look good, bit of discolouration in the header tank, so will go for the change coolant option, the system holds good pressure, hasnt used a drop of coolant, nothing leaking, nothing in the oil suggesting issue with head gasket, and visa versa in the coolant.(and i have experience of head gaskets failing on a previous 164 Q4...)
Also checked the temps at the thermostat, header tank, the main outlet pipe on the front of the engine with a laser thermometer it was reading very much the same as the gauge so i dont really think that is the problem..
Of course it could be related to the actual heat of the engine, exhaust manifold and other bits in the engine bay affecting the temperature sensor, have to admit that i had a hard look at the forward vents the flow of air through the bonnet vents and bumper vents doesnt look good but thats standard so possibly lots of related things...
I am leaning towards a bit of build up of crap in the coolant system and a damn good flush to resolve it now....As said start with the cheapest option first...I only considered that if the thermostat was maybe obstructed and not opening fully could that be contributing. I dont think it is a terminal problem, just when the ambient temperature gets towards 20+ deg, my normal motorway cruisung is unaffected temp is firmly at 85..
Thanks guys i will keep you all informed
