gearstick floppy and extremely hard finding 5th and 6th

As described in the title...just got my GTV (-99) MOTed after its been standing for 1 years. Before it had always been a bit tough finding 6th gear but nothing I cared too much about since it wasn't that much of a fuss and its not as if its the gear that constantly gets shifted in and out of.

Now though everything is a complete catastrophe! The only smooth gear change is 1st to get into 3rd or 4th you first have to put the lever in neutral and "wiggle it about" a bit (wobble everywhere) before engaging and to get 5th and 6th takes a great deal of muscle and fuss! Also all too often when trying to engage from 2nd to 3rd (where 3rd SHOULD be) it engages 1st! which is a very unpleasnt thing t happen when accelerating with cars behind for it to suddenly slow down without the brake lights!!

Anyone had the same problems with a solution!?

Many thanks!

Remove the gear lever gaiter, and if like my car there is a bush that can migrate from the housing. As this happened to my car, I could only engage 3rd & 4th. I try and find a picture to show.
