I don't trust garages either. When I had my Fiat Coupe cambelt changed at a well know FCCUK recommended specialist, it came back without the cam cover having been taken off.
I guess that meant that they used the tippex method as opposed to correctly locking the cams. Also the price I ended up paying was nearly twice what I was quoted.
The engine mounts were still loose as well...
The only way to get stuff done properly is to do it yourself. Of course you won't get an invoice, but if you take pictures along the way you can proove that work has been done.
You will never be cool driving a Vauxhall.
