Help Front shocks/springs - captively held?

Potential daft question, but bear with me:

I will be doing the shocks/springs all round soon. I have the Alfa workshop manual which I have been furiously perusing.

So far I am quite chuffed as I have already learnt I wont have to bugger about with track-rod-ends like on most cars - well done Mr Alfa and Romeo

The manual seems to suggest that the spring is held captively within the shock unit and top mount - is this correct?

In the manual it simply states
- remove bottom bolts from wheel upright
- remove 3 x upper bolts in engine bay
- remove spring and shock assembly as a whole

If this is the case, than wa-hoo. Normally you would have to compress the spring to get it off and then carefully remove.... can anyone confirm it really is that easy on the GTV/Spider??

Member car:

GTV V6, ex 166er

Not sure but that soiunds about right for a Macpherson strut unit - as long as the spring is fully extended first with no copression left in it

I'm sure that's correct, it comes out as one unit.

Of course, you will have to compress your new springs to fit them to your new shock absorbers before you refit - but I'm sure you know that already.

That's certainly how I interpret it. Remove complete unit, then compress the spring off the car to remove the bearing unit.

Shocks and springs come out as 1 unit.
Undo the fixings at the bottom and the three fixings in the strut mount at the top and it will all come out together.
Have to undo the big nut on the top of the shock for the spring to come off
