V6 oil cooler pipes leak

hi folks

just noticed a small patch of oil under the cooler area and suspect cooler pipes. my brother is into mech, engineering and told me to try a company called Pirtek, these guys are industrial suppliers of all things hosing and pipe work, told me to try braided steam hosing??

Any ideas or how much would a replacement set would cost??

My cooler pipes went a few years ago (almost to the day), and I was shocked at how much it would cost to get sorted.

A lot of garages bluntly refused the job, because it's such a pain in the **** to fix.

You can expect quotes of 300-450 (this was from 2008), expensive because it includes the cooler. Apparently, the pipes are steel and the oil cooler itself is aluminium, so when the pipes corrode they fuse to the aluminium cooler threads.

The guy I got to do it in the end used to be a rally Mechanic and had a knack at getting them off without ruining the threads on the cooler, so all I had to pay for was the pipes and labour which came to 150.

Have a look at this thread I started a while ago. It outlines a plan I had for a cunning way to save a lot of money on this job. I haven't got around to trying it yet as my car is in bits for another reason.

Oil cooler thread.

The tip I always throw in here is to try to cut the nuts off the pipes with a dremel or similar rather than just attempting to undo with a spanner because they are almost certainly corroded to the cooler rad and trying to turn them just shears the unions off the rad, hence it needs replacing too. But yes, I think Pirtek will make suitable hoses.

Read back Perksy's thread. I think his idea is sound. If I had to change one again I would use his method. I went the route of having pipes made up and it was only semi successful and not much cheaper than buying genuine Alfa pipes. The whole job didn't save as much money as I wanted to either.
