Help Grating oscillating noise when accelerating from cold start

Hello all,

I only seem to post anything when my Spider goes wrong. Hope you can help me out this time.

I'm hearing a grating noise when I pull away and accelerate. The grating noise appears to be coming from somewhere under the bonnet or near the wheel on the driver's side. It is an oscillating noise which speeds up as I go faster but goes away when I let off the acceleration or put the clutch in. There is no noise when I rev the engine in neutral. Also, after the car has warmed up a little, the noise disappears.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but last night on the motorway, the noise turned into a regular knocking whilst travelling at high speed. Also, it seemed that the power was down. However, once I'd limped off the motorway, stopped the car and set off again, it was fine, even when I accelerated hard and had it up to seventy.

Any ideas? Is my car truly fecked?!
