Attachment 105378Hi to all
After hearing that next years MOTs are going to fail cars that have the dreaded airbag light on
im really worried im not going to able to get her sorted out.
Im not giving up on my poorly GTV she has the dreaded light and i will be dammed if im giving her up for a blasted bulb that i cant shift i have managed to get the pinouts for the ECU and im going to tackle the thing once and for all.
My question is does anyone now if it is a negative or positive feed FROM the airbag ECU that puts the bulb out on the dash.
Pictures just taken of my phase 1 after the Teles i spent hours paint stripping and vapour matted and then having them powder coated and laquered all over.
I have got an original Zender cup spoiler and a brand new brake light ready to have a coat of Blue but not sure if i should take the plunge.
Alternatively you could always get your friendly local indie garage to stick his diagnostic thingy on and that should tell yo where the fault is that is causing the air bag light to stay on and then fix it - that is what I need to do.
Just a friendly suggestion - and then you get working airbags again as well.
usually it's just as simple as a reset on the light, that's all i did on mine, with the free FIATECUSCAN software you can downloads, and a £8 cable off ebay albeit slightly modified but very very simply to do if you have a soldering iron
As said above, the fix should be to just hook up the diagnostics and cancel the fault. The one and only time this happened to mine that was all we did & its never recurred. If it does it is usually just due to the connector below the seat being pulled around when the seat is adjusted.
Problem is best avoided altogether by only moving the seats when the ignition is turned off.
Still won't fool the most picky of testers, if u look at a car in fully working order the lights all go off in a staggered fashion, most people wouldn't notice however but if ur testing cars day in day out it might just get noticed, I've seen ABS lights wired up to oil pressure switches lol
Check your seatbelt pre-tensioner covers - they have a habbit of moving when you move your seat back and forth. Unclip them and put them back on so they fit snugly. Failing this just stick some black electrical tape over the bulb inside the dash unit. SImple!
That said, i can do without an airbag but not ABS thats the life saver...........
The problem that no-one has really given thought to is that light on or off... no-one can confirm the integrity of the airbag itself the light is just an indication of a circuit self test...i'd put good money on some airbags that appear good not working when needed due to some other problem.
Rarebare, on here sells a modified cable. Just download the Fiatecuscan and connect to the car and correct the fault. Why bother taking it all apart and posibly cause more problems. Then you'll be able to correct any other faults you may have. Car looks nice though.
if the light wont go off even with a reset.. I guess you could stick a Maplins five second timer in there.. ignition on.. five.. seconds later light goes out.. but that would be illegal.. so I'm not going to do it..
When the airbag light came on on my GTV Alfadiag, Fiat ECU scan and Unidiag wouldn't even connect to the ECU, so i could't tell what the fault was or reset the light.
I gave up in the end, the subsequent owner found out that a pre-tensioner was faulty.
I've never come across a car where it wasn't a faulty seat belt or wiring to it that put the light on. The air bag just sits in it's little space minding its own business, the seat belt is in constant use. The air bags on cars only used to have a recommended life of ten years, I wonder if that's still the case?
Also I seem to remember GTVs having an issue with the wiring under the seat which had an easy fix?
Take the instrument cluster apart and stick a piece of black rubber foam down the airbag light tube.
Best solution ever. Here in Spain they check the Airbag light since a couple years. I tried taking my car to an Alfa dealer and I ended up calling the police cause they wouldnt give me my car back if I didnt pay 30€ when they didnt fix s _ _ t. I finally blanked it and they never said anything at the MOT, I think they only get annoying if it stays on.
