If the wipers were set on intermittent it may well be the usual hardened grease problem. What happens ( and it did on mine ) is the grease in the gearbox part of the wiper hardens over the years. This hardened grease then seems to stop the self parking mechanism(s) working properly until some time later when it frees up by itself. Until next time. Normal ( not intermittant ) operation will be OK.
To fix mine, I removed the wiper unit ( note where the blades are when parked and the position of the crank at the motor spindle ) desolder the control box from the motor unit and open the gearbox. Remove all the existing grease and clean everything thoroughly. Re-pack with fresh grease ( I used just ordinary LM ), resolder the control box and refit. Pay attention to the location of the crank as it's easy to get it 180° out!
If you have a phase 1, there are two self park mechanisms in the gearbox which is why the wipers do an extra sweep when you switch them off. I think this disappeared with phase 2.
