You can remove the existing gear knob and replace it with one of the after-market ones but you will have to do a little tweaking. I fitted a plain alloy one to mine and machined a new lifter mechanism to match it.

There are a good selection of gear knobs on e-bay suitable for the lift up shift reverse. I've just bought one which I thought I'd made a mistake with but then the instructions say just leave off the lower gearknob collar which covers the locking grub screws and don't use the plastic sizing inserts.........Not convinced but I'll see how it goes as I was very pleased with Alfa badged Knob 15 free post.

When you remove the old knob and shorten the shaft it is a simple matter to slide off the "lift up mechanism" - it is just a plastic sleeve - and you can always re-fit later!

A Motorbike ;)

i have heard that it is probably ok to remove it on 5 speed boxes, but doing it on the 6 speed is asking for trouble. i presume 6th and reverse are in the same sort of place? if you do it, just be careful not to accidentally try to put it in reverse whilst going at a rate of knots
