Exhaust fumes - GTV

Seem to have exhaust fumes coming in through the air vents when driving in traffic. When I select the recycle-air button the smell reduces. Sometimes really bad though. Any ideas as to why this is happening...possibly the 'Cabin Filter' ??? I have a 1999 Red GTV 2.0 (Tan Leather).

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

No cabin filter in RHD GTVs. Are you sure nothing has died in or near to the air ducting? I fitted a carbon monoxide indicator on the dash of one of my cars (same type as we fit inside aircraft) and in traffic the orange crystals would go black unless I closed the air intake flap. Inside the Blackwall Tunnel it used to go black almost instantaneously!

Several years ago I suffered with a similar smell of engine/exhaust fumes in the cabin and the problem was identified when the car failed its MOT. The cause of the exhaust fume smell in the cabin was a small area of corrosion on the central exhaust pipe section. It wasn't visible to me as the corrosion was on the top side of exhaust pipe.

The central section of the exhaust was replaced and the smell of engine fumes in the cabin disappeared and never returned. You might want to get your exhaust system checked to rule this out.
