Can idle stepper affect starting?

Just wondering, if my idle control valve is acting up, would it affect starting? My car turns over lots before it starts and I usually need to put my foot on the accelerator before it starts.

When it does start, the idle usually takes a while to catch, when it does it seems to idle fine. Every now and then it seems to cut out and is a pain to restart.

I opened up the idle stepper motor and gave it a clean and lubricated it.

The car started up after turning over a few times without me having to have my foot on the throttle and the idle was sweet from cold.

I turned it off and it wouldn't re-start again. Is it possible the motor is shot and causing me all these problems or is it wishful thinking?

I had a similar fault on my mgf, there is a sequence whch involves turning the ignition on and then putting the accelerator to the floor 4 times , then turn of ignigition for 5 mins and then starting. This works perfectly on the mgf. I don't know if this is the same for an Alfa, as so far I've had no trouble with the steeper motor on my spider. They do seem to get upset once they go out of step. It's probably the sign of needing replacing. Lynn

I don't know if there is a sequence like that?

I don't think the idle control valve would have any influence on how the car starts, does anyone know if they do?

I would guess that it could affect the start.

If the valve was sticking or working incorrectly you would get a similar effect to starting the car with the accelerator pressed down.

Or if it was stuck in the closed position the car might not be getting enough air to even idle the engine.
