Hi, I am having problems trying to start my 96 GTV 2.0 ts and am in desperate need of some help. She will just about start with jump leads but turns over quite slowly. Firstly I assumed that either the battery or alternator had died as after leaving her running for a good 20 mins or so and turning her off she wouldn't start again. Nothing! Ignition lights came on, radio, windows worked etc. but the car simply wouldn't turn over. I went for the easiest option and bought a new battery (Suspected I needed one anyway before this happened). Yet again, Ignition lights, radio, windows all work but as soon as I turn the key to start her. Nothing!
I then looked under the bonnet. I recently removed the throttle body to clean it but I don't think that is the problem as she started after that. I then noticed, what seems to be, an unattached earth cable and cannot see where it should be connected to. I am now assuming that maybe when connecting jump leads the car is being earthed, but how??? Its confusing! I cant get my head around it. I am simply connecting battery to battery +ve to +ve and -ve to -ve.... Now that I think about it I am jumping of a bmw and i'm connecting the +ve of my gtv battery to the +ve terminal on the bmw and the -ve of my gtv battery to the chassis of the bmw (bmw battery's are hidden away somewhere and all you have under the bonnet is a +ve terminal) So I could be earthing my car/battery. Maybe that is why she turns over slow when connected up? Not getting a good flow of current?? Im not very good with electronics you can probably tell. haha
Anyway I need help to identify the loose earth cable and get it reconnected. I only hope this is the cause of the problem and is easy fixed. It has obviously came loose while driving or I have disturbed it when removing the throttle body. I have uploaded photos and will post the link as soon as a moderator has had time to review and approve them
The cable is a thick black electrical wire connected to the body of the car, directly under the coolant bottle. There are actually two cables coming from this point. One is connected to the bell housing/gearbox. I just need to find out where the other one goes.
If anyone knows where it goes or has the same car and could look under their own bonnet and point me in the right direction, it would be very much appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance
