The top inner bushes can wear/perish ..I had to replace/powerflex mine.. I could push the old bushes out with my thumb.. the load is 'inward' toward the centre of the car.. the bushes had collapsed on their outer faces and the centre sleeve was no longer centrally co-axial with the outer sleeve.. by a long chalk.. in a similar fashion that the front wishbone bushes collapse.. (albeit a lot more frequently)..
agreed you can't powerflex the top outer.. (its a ball joint.. which is amazingly apparent when you take the wheel off).. while it was out, I reconditioned the whole arm.. replaced ball joints first.. still knocking.. replaced inner bushes.. knock gone!
powerflexed the inner bushes..
good second hand ball joint on the outer...
bushes 25 quid a side..
ball joint 30 quid a side = 55 quid a side
= 110 quid both sides...
two hours a side.. in my driveway.. 10 bolts.. 2 nuts.. ball joint splitter .. blowtorch.. hacksaw.. big hammer.. job done .. hundreds of quid saved which I am now going to spend on beer..
Im not arguing with anyone.. or agreeing for that matter.. I'm an existensialist.. I had a similar problem to Rob and this is how I fixed it..
I know some specialists say they don't need doing.. but mine did..
bushes came from 'EB spares'.. ball joints from 'Just alfa'..
