Yes, I suppose you're all right - the parasitic (nice term) load of 2 or 3 cylinders doing nothing except draining power wouldn't be good and I know the maths wouldn't quite work out like I said. I'm also very aware that there must be very very good reasons why cars don't all do this and prefer features like start-stop on a lot of cars these days.
All the same I'd love to give it a go just to see. I might even give it a little go with two cylinders (one on each bank, effectively giving a V4) giving the wiring dummy loads, and just see what happens and if its drivable.
