Ok, so today I took the inlet chamber off again. Found that runners #1, #2 and #4 were very oily, but the oil was above the step in them. So I guess the oil's coming in via the inlet chamber (which is pretty clean), possibly via the egr system.
I also torqued up the inlet manifold nuts to 30Nm as advised by Smaky (the book says 18Nm IIRC). Also dismantled the variator solenoid, and found that was manky and stuck (Thanks to Steve/Alfa916 for the suggestion).
So...after all that it's running a lot cleaner. Still have the same misfire at 2,500 rpm or so, but it seems to be a little bit better. But that's possibly because the engine's getting up to temperature now that I've put a working thermostat on.
I'm going to use it as my runabout for the rest of the week and see how it goes...
@SB - Thanks for the input. Valve stem seals were done (twice) and the inlet gasket is a long story....!
