Ok guys, Imma gonna skip the introduction section and introduce myself here,
Hello to all!!!
Ok, now that thats out of the way, im looking for some help. Ill try to keep it short, though its a long story
A friend of mine has or had the GTV up until a few weeks ago until i bought it from him. the car has a few problems, first and foremost, when my friend had it, it had the dreaded tappet sound from the engine, i have ordered a set of feeler gauges to sort it out, he also complained that the car didn't seem to have as much power as it should. A mechanic told him that due to the tappet clicking noise, he would have to change the camshafts, As the valves are adjustable, i feel that changing the cams is a tad severe, wouldnt an adjustment of the intake/exhaust clearance sort it out?
Moving on, the same "mechanic" offered to tackle the problem, all this was before i acquired the car, he disconnected the rad, the air con, the clutch, the fans, the gear level, the exhaust, the air flow meter, the drive shafts, the turbo etc etc.
Dont know why, but he never actually went near the cams.
I bought the car from my friend, in this state, all the removed parts in the boot and in boxes, and started to put it all together again. Got it all back in one piece and fortunately, i didnt have any nuts and bolts left over which is a first for me and quite pleasing!
My problem is as follows, apart from the original tappet/valve clickety click noise, the engine runs horribly, it seems to be only firing on 4 or 5 cylinders. Before it was taken apart, it ticked over fine, apart from the noisy valves, when i press the accelerator hard, it stalls and dies, i have to tease it down and bring the revs to about 2500-3000 for it to run more or less smoothly. Im in the process of pulling the plugs to see if theyre shot, but im having trouble finding a socket that fits in the hole, my plugs have the 21mm nut. Would any of you guys have any idea what i should be looking for? Im not a mechanic, though i always do my own maintenance and repairs where possible and have kept my 1992 BMW 318 running smoothly through over 300,000 kilometers.
Ive checked for vacuum leaks, all hoses are fairly new and no probs there, great vacuum from the air filter/MAF unit, but i cant pinpoint why it should be running so rough. Might the onboard comp need some time to adjust after removing so many parts, MAF and throttle body included? What might cause the rough idling? Im not too well up as to where i should be looking for a prob of this type.
Any help, suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
As i mentioned in another post, i have access to a link for repair manuals for most alfas so if anyone wants it, ask and ill PM it.
Thanks in advance!
