Restoring faded to purple/blue rear speaker & brake light fabric
Like many, my rear speaker and 3rd brake light fabric covers had faded to purple and looked awful.
I looked into ways of fixing the existing fabric with Dylon ( apparently the fabric will not take it ), liquid shoe polish and spraying with paint.
In the end, I decided to buy some speaker fabric ( £6 delivered off eBay ) and re-cover them. I expected the speakers to be a real pain to do and the 3rd brake light cover to be simple. I was wrong, the speakers were dead easy and the brake light cover the more tricky ( but still not difficult ).
Pic 1 : Comparison of the new and old fabric
Pic 2 : The fabric is just glued to the plastic. Just peel it off.
Pic 3 : Using an elastic band, temporarily fasten the fabric in place. Pull the fabric through the band to get the fabric on the front nice and taut. No elastic band the right size? Walk a few metres along your street, you're bound to find about a dozen that your postie has dropped! They're perfect.
( No pics of the next stage - insufficient hands and spray glue is messy and my camera expensive ).
I then used spray glue. Working a small bit at a time, pull the fabric away from the plastic against the elastic band and spray the glue onto the plastic edge. Release the fabric and move on to the next section. You're doing about 30mm at a time. Make sure no glue can get around the edge onto the front surface.
Let the glue go tacky and press the fabric down onto the glue with a flat edge ( I used a screwdriver ).
Leave to set fully and remove the elastic band. Trim off the excess fabric. I also wrapped some copper wire around the fabric and twisted it off to give a bit more strength but I don't think it's really needed.
Pic 4 : I did the brake light cover one edge at a time. I did the widest edge first, then the opposite edge both with contact adhesive and finally the two sides with spray glue folding and trimming the fabric at the corners. I used masking tape to ensure spray glue only went where it was wanted.
Pic 5 : The finished grilles. One corner of the brake light cover isn't as neat as I'd like but it can't be seen.
Next step, get some better speakers to put under them!
Hope this helps someone.
Incidentally, can anyone tell me how to put the attached pictures separately within the text?
