Reverse gear = first gear?!

Evening. If I select reverse gear and it doesnt crunch into place, the car moves forwards upon depression of the gas pedal. Is this right? Should reverse crunch before engagement or is my car gearbox screwed? Help!

Sounds like problems in the box to me...does it move forward like it's in 1st, or a higher gear?

Reverse can crunch, but should always provide backwards movement!
