V6 first impressions and comparison with TS
I’ve been a V6 owner for ten days now and I thought I’d take a moment to note down my first impressions of ownership and also some comparisons with my old car, a phase 1 GTV 2.0TS.
Before I bought the car, I did a great deal of research on the differences between the TS and the V6 to see whether or not I could justify the steeper running costs and after ten days behind the wheel I can reveal that... of course I bloody can, this thing goes like a *as*ard.
Granted the V6 is 4 yrs younger with fewer miles and in better condition than my TS but even having factored that in, life with a V6 is a totally different ball game. The creamy low rev torque makes town driving a cinch whilst opening her up is a truly thrilling experience. This is a properly rapid car.
The V6’s superior straight line speed is a given but much more subjective were the reports I read on the handling which have many claim that the V6 is a bit heavy at the front and that the TS is better balanced. I only have good things to say about both really. Perhaps the V6 is marginally less nimble and not quite as perfectly poised in the turn-in as the TS but it more than compensates for this with a much more compliant ride (better dampers I’m told) and a feeling of total sure-footedness on the motorway.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the fuel economy too. According to my calculations, the V6 is only coming off worse by 3 or 4 mpg in comparison with the TS. I imagine this probably has more to do with having to rev the TS engine quite hard to get the most out of it.
The phase 2 interior is a much nicer place to be although this would be the same regardless of engine size I suppose. I seem to remember that the seats are more comfortable in the TS.
To summarise, as much as I loved the TS, it's hard to deny that all of the V6's qualities ultimately add up to a more rewarding driving experience. Whilst the TS was more of a rev-happy, pin-sharp kart of a car, the V6 is just as happy to show more of a grown up side to her character if asked. I wonder if I could still say the same thing if were to bung on a sports exhaust....?
The only imperfections are that the brakes squeak very loudly at the front when stop-starting in traffic although their performance is fine. Not sure if there’s much I can do about this apart from hoping that the noise improves over time.
There’s also a very faint whooshing coming from somewhere near the cam belt. I thought it might be one of the belts but it’s a constant sound only audible from the cabin when stationary and I can’t really hear it from the engine bay with the bonnet open. I’m probably just being a bit paranoid.
Lastly and much to my surprise, I am slightly underwhelmed by the noise. The TS had a fruity exhaust and induction kit whereas the V6 is totally standard so for the time being, I actually prefer the throaty aggression of my TS. In fact, I have to admit that I have even caught myself sentimentally repeating the TS’s engine note and exhaust noise in my head from time to time. I am looking into the best way to remedy this and I’m sorely tempted to wait for one of Dan's Unicorse exhaust copies for the V6 later in the year.
Other than these very minor quibbles, the car is perfect. She is in exceptional condition and I must thank Symon for keeping her in such good nick and for tolerating my obsessive daily emailing for the last month or so! I was truly sad to see the TS go but I know that I’ve made the right choice in upgrading and already love the V6 to bits.
