Right guys, I am seriously considering swapping my 147 for a Spider. Current car is 2005 JTD 16v with 52k on on the clock. Pretty much immaculate condition, serviced at an independent Alfa specialist with full cambelt change & service, wishbones, droplinks and glow plugs all done xmas 2009. I reckon I could get up to 6k from a private sale (may be ambitious but anyway…).
I don't want to spend any more money than my current car is worth, so I'd be looking a a direct swap (or thereabouts) or buying a spider for a little less, maybe about the 4.5k mark. If I did this I figure any cash left over from the sale of my car would go towards fixing any little niggles with the Spider, extra for insurance (group 14D vs group 17) etc. I currently do a decent commute to work everyday so my diesel is ideal, BUT I am soon to be moving into the city so I will be walking to work most of the time, and this will probably more than offset the extra fuel the Spider will consume.
I've always wanted a Spider, but the 147 was the more sensible choice because I could afford one with minimal mileage and that was much newer than a spider for the same cash. To be fair I love my 147, and touch-wood it has been very reliable and is still an absolute pleasure…*BUT it's not a Spider!
So I guess what I'm asking is, am I looking for trouble if move to a Spider that will be a few years older than my current car, probably with similar mileage (or higher)? Will I regret it? Or is someone going to convince me to just do it?
PS. Took a trip to a nearby garage at the weekend to look at a Spider they had. It wasn't the best example as it had some awful chav-tastic speakers hanging out the doors, scratches around the mirrors, cloth interior, wrong colour…*but it still felt great!
Cheers for thoughts and sorry for long post!
