I've had 25 cars in 15yrs!!
I've had 8 Fiesta's,
2x Pug 205 1.9 GTi's
Pug 309 1.6XSi
Pug 309 1.6SRi
Honda CRX VTEC mk2
Impreza UK turbo
Volvo V40 2.0
mk2 Golf GTi 16v
FTO GP Version R Aero Series
Evo V GSR
Audi A3 1.6
Alfa 145 1.8TS
Alfa 147 1.6TS
GTV 3.0 24V V6
I've only ever been stranded once & that was with the CRX. It was anything wrong with the car itself but a bit of a bodge job a supposed "Honda tuner" did!!
I had an aftermarket DTA ECU fitted by this bloke who races VTEC powered Mini's. The DTA ECU does away with the dizzy so they have to fit a crank angle sensor next to the crank pulley. The bracket he'd fitted was meant to be held on with 2 bolts, he'd cross threaded 1 of the bolts & buggered the threads up so after a few weeks the bolt worked itself loose & the brack moved causing the sensor to get mashed up by the pulley. Luckily I was near J30 M1 so called John Noble Motorport in Chesterfield & got them to recover my car to their place for fixing.
Upon further inspection they found that the mapping was way out so they remapped it for me!! It was overfuelling like hell. Once they'd sorted it power jumped up to 236bhp & I was averaging 30mpg as apposed to 20mpg!!
Anyways, that's the only time i've been stranded, i have had other faulots but nothing bad!!
I can easily say that the most reliable cars i've had are all the Jap stuff!!
Oh & this prob doesn't really count cos i actually bought the 145 as a none runner. I've not even had it on the road yet. I bought it in Nov last yr as a project. I messed about with it for a few weeks, couldn't fix it myself so sent it to Autotech where it's had the wiring etc gone over with a fine tooth comb to try find out why it dies as soon as you touch the throttle. All sorts of sensors & connections were also checked. Turns out it's the ECU which after several months i've managed to find 1 with immobilizer box, keys etc etc.
Spoke to them yesterday & it's running fine now but has engine light on with new ECU. They've broken the screen on their daig machine so don't know what the problem is. They say it'll just be an old fault code that needs erasing & they'll confirm this when their new screen arrives this week!!
Then it'll have 12months MOT put on it & go up for sale as i'm not bothered about keeping it now I have the GTV!!
