Fuel sender change DIY how safe or easy?
I've been having trouble with my fuel gauge and I think I have traced the problem to my fuel tank sender.
I removed my back seats to access the fuel tank sender connector. I checked:
b) the sender wire being open circuit = zero gauge reading
c) the sender wire shorted to car earth = full gauge reading.
I even went to the trouble of connecting a variable resistor to my fuel sender wire and found I could control my gauge with it.
Surely this means its my fuel level sensor at fault. (thoughts and comments welcome)
So my main question:
Considering petrol frightens me, should I be unscrewing that big white screw cap on the top of my fuel tank to get to the fuel sensor/sender thing? Is there anything I should be aware of. Do I need a special tool to do this? Should I take it to someone who is better insured than me?
