Driveshaft rubber boot - gearbox end
I've just taken my Phase II GTV twinspark to a very local garage to get a front wheel bearing changed. I would normally take it to a very good indy specialist, but it's 40 miles down the dual carriageway from my house, and didn't want to risk the bearing seizing en-route as the noise has been getting worse.
Whilst it is in there, I asked the garage to replace the gearbox end driveshaft gater, which is split. When I phoned to enquire about progress this afternoon, the mechanic said he wouldn't be keen to change this gater, as often on Italian / French cars it involves stripping down the c.v joint. After I queried this, he said he would take another look.
Looking in the workshop manual, it doesn't look like a particularly difficult job, so I'm a bit confused as to the reluctance? Am I right, or is it really a specialist job? If he wont do it, I'll take it down the road to the indy specialist who will, but I thought it would be easy to do whilst the hub is off for the bearing anyway. Its the drivers side front wheel by the way.
Any advice appreciated!
