12 Years on - a 2.0 GTV Evaluation
My GTV is now 12 years old. I am the second owner and I thought that maybe my experiences could be of some interest to owners or potential owners.
I bought S8 GTV five years ago. It was an import - so no remote locking or alarm. Apart from that it is the same as any other. It had 46k on the clock and a full service history - at that time no cambelt change (72000) was still the norm.
I joined a couple of forums (this being the second choice at that time) and they were saying cambelts needed changing at 36k. So I had the belt changed. I looked at the rear tyres - wearing on the inside edges- so powerflexed the rear suspension. I have changed the oil/filters roughly when recommended.
I have now done 90,000 miles since I bought it and that means I am now on my 4th cambelt and variator.
I am now up to 140000 miles and am as happy with it now as I was five years ago. The engine/gearbox are as snappy now as then. It will cost you money to do the cambelt/servicing/suspension but it is truly worth it - just boot it as you are cornering and feel that rear lock on (powerflex still working 90k later) - a truly great design.
Yes there have been other niggling problems - I lost all heating control (£250). The MAF needed replacing (£150) and other bits and pieces which I have forgotten. However it has been generally reliable and no worse than any other marque.
My point? - spend the money and a GTV is the best fun you will get on four wheels (for the price).
