When I did my V6 thermostat I didn't drain any coolant, and I didn't loose too much. Maybe half a pint or so.

Personally if the coolant is good and clean I wouldn't drain it, just make sure you have some of the correct type to top up with afterwards

I agree with Symon. I did this job last weekend and you only loose about a pint.

Unless you know its been done recently, for the sake of 10 worth of new coolant, I would change it. You know you have the correct mixture then. A reverse flush doesn't do any harm either cos a garage is unlikely to do it.
